Souper, Man! Culinary Arts: The People's Champion

Gladwin CTE students Brendan Armstrong and Ryan OLaughlin

Well, CTE's Culinary Arts students flat-out rocked it at the Gladwin County Community Foundation's Souper Challenge Saturday night, bringing home first-place hardware in the People's Choice Award category and third place for the Judge's Award.

About a dozen food providers were represented at the fundraiser. CA Instructor Heidi Rocha said the award-winning Chicken con Queso soup was the result of several weeks' worth of effort.

"The students tested out the recipe a few weeks ago and made the necessary adjustments to perfect it," Rocha said. "Over this past week, the entire class helped prepare 10 gallons of soup. They definitely learned the importance of following the recipe step-by-step for consistency and proper cooling, storing and reheating for large batches of soup."

Gladwin High School seniors Brendan Armstrong and Ryan O'Laughlin were on site at the event to make sure the hard work paid off.

"It was wonderful having Brendan and Ryan volunteer during the event," Rocha added. "They were there from setup to cleanup."
